Abstract
Author studied 347 children with pneumonia, admitted to Pusan Children¢¥s Charity Hospital, from January 1965 to December 1965. Especially clinical and bacteriological findings and nursing care, and obtained the following results.
1) Of the 347 patients, 241 were infants and 167 were under 6 months of age,
2) According to x-ray findings, 68 percent had lobar pneumonia and of these 70 per cent had right upper lobar pneumonia.
3) Of organisms isolated by bacteriological investigation 34.5% were staphylococcus, 23, 8% were pneumonococcus and 20%were gram negative bacillus.
4) Reports of sensitivity tests showed organisms generally responded to broad-spectrum antibiotics, especially albamycin, erythromycin and neomycin, but were resistant to streptomycin and penicillin, 5) Over all mortality rate was 17 per cent and prognosis was the worse in infants under six months of age than in older children.
6) In care of these infants, nurses have to depend on general principles especially on supplying humidity and appropriate temperature of ward adequate nutrition between nurse a ;A younger patients who do not talk.
7) In care of pneumonia in younger children, following symptomatic procedures should be stressed; oxygen inhalation for patients with dyspnea, control of high fever and febrile convulsion, and prevention of bed sore. There also must be accurate observation of change of symptoms and immediate reporting to the doctor and appropriate treatment given by the doctor.
